International Year of Soils (IYS) – Invitation

Upon the initiative of Global Soil Partnership, the 68th UN General Assembly declared 2015 the International Year of Soils (IYS), which is celebrated worldwide through multitude of events (http://www.fao.org/soils-2015/en/) aimed at raising the awareness of the importance of soils for the Earth, their multiple roles and the existing challenges for their sustainable use. For the first time, the soil is officially recognized as a non-renewable natural resource since its formation takes very long time, but is easily destroyed. Designating the soil as a non-renewable natural resource is a major shift in soil policy.

This is an excellent opportunity to gather the representatives of all scientific institutions involved in soil science and competent institutions dealing with management of soil resources in the Republic of Serbia, as well as to give national contribution to this international initiative.

On this occasion, together with its relevant partners, Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops will organize the national IYS event on 10 September 2015 at Rimski šančevi, near Novi Sad.

The most important outcome from this national event will be the Declaration on Soil, the document which will underline all aspects of the significance and multiple roles of soils, as well as to list the reasons and possibilities for its preservation. The Executive Committee for sustainability of the Declaration postulates will be appointed during the event, which shall secure the cooperation between research facilities, relevant government institutions and farmers.
